Red-tailed hawks are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats throughout the state. Although they can inhabit forests, wetlands, and even urban areas, they prefer open country, patrolling the grasslands, prairies and ag fields of our region. 

Prairie clover, lupine, and black-eyed susans are among a variety of flowers native to the area, and serve as forage for small mammals rummaging through pastures and plains. I incorporated these plants, along with the tracks of squirrels and rabbits around the hawks head, to suggest the relationship that these species share with one another. 

Whether plant, predator or prey, I believe each deserves appreciation for the balance and beauty they bring to the natural world.
